Graphic Design Is Not an Art

Nowadays it is one most interesting questions: is graphic an art? I have heard to ask this question several times among many of my friends, mates, family members and different people. It is an ongoing speculation and controversial matters among the artists, designer and aficionados. I’ve seen this question in different blogs more than hundred times. But the conclusion is yet to come.
The simple and understandable answer is that graphic design is not an art. If you ask: why? Then follow rest part of this article to know it clearly and distinctly.
Now let me explain it: why?

We know that is called graphic design which combines both text and picture for a good visual presentation in order to convey a message. As a visual medium of it, we can use printing paper, internet and television.
The first and basic reason of is that graphic design has he power of motivation with no power of inspiration which is mandatory for an art. Like Plato’s former definition of art, graphic design is an imitation of imitation where the matter of creation and innovation lacks. It communicates with something which already exists. Art evokes emotion and after the proper apprehension of it, one gets pleased with it. Graphic design only can motivate one. Graphic design is a skill which can be improved by hard practice. But creation of art is not possible by hard practice where the most desired thing is talent. Unless you have talent you can draw a graphic design but not an art. Besides, art is multidimensional and has no interface; same art can communicate different people in different ways. To be more precise, different people can get different meaning and different message from same art according to their perception power and aesthetic taste. On the other hand different people get same meaning from same graphic design. Art has the power of self introduction and interpretation which graphic design lacks. A piece of Graphic design is understood, it tries to communicate people with a particular message and motivate them to do something. Art can be both static and dynamic, but graphic design is always dynamic. To be more precise, after the proper apprehension of an art, it can create a silent stasis on mind; on the other hand, graphic design makes desire or loathing. Former is a taste, later is an opinion.
Form the above point of view; we can again say graphic design is not a graphic art. For the later is the technique of engraving and printing by making art with Litho stone and zinc, through different dry and wet engraving methods. Auckland deserves to have the credit of this engraving and printing of graphic art.
These are the main reasons for which, we can conclude graphic design is not art.
